Prevent Child Abuse North Carolina (PCANC) welcomes Sharon Baxter of Durham to its 2018/2019 statewide board of directors. Baxter joins a team of 13 volunteer leaders dedicated to ensuring all North Carolina children thrive in safe, stable, nurturing relationships and environments.
“Sharon’s 21 years of experience in pediatrics makes her a great addition to our leadership team,” said Sharon Hirsch, PCANC President and CEO. “Her passion and experience working with children and their parents will support our efforts to make wise investments in programs built on evidence to prevent child abuse and neglect before they occur.”
Baxter has bachelor degrees in both Chemistry and Psychology from Duke University and earned her Doctor of Medicine Degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. She practiced General Pediatrics for 21 years in both academic and community settings. Her pediatric training included a fellowship in Ambulatory and Community Pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Through her practice at an urban teaching hospital and neighborhood health center in Pittsburgh, a private practice in Charlotte, and a Community Health Center outside of Charlotte, she saw the importance of supporting parents in their roles as nurturers, teachers, and providers.
Baxter has volunteered in medical mission trips to Central and South America, has served as an active school volunteer for 12 years, and is a member of the neighborhood association board. She currently resides in Durham with her husband, their 14-year-old son and their labradoodle.
Baxter will serve a three year term on the PCANC board.
