Circle of Parents

by beckyw — last modified November 05, 2007

The Circle of Parents Program is firmly rooted in the principles of mutual self-help, family support, and shared leadership between parents and professionals.  With the assistance of the Duke Endowment, our agency provides training, technical assistance, and support to local communities across the state to implement Circle of Parents groups.

Download a Circle of Parents fact sheet.

Essentially, a Circle of Parents group provides a place for parents to build their own sense of competence and power.  They do this by building relationships and connecting with other parents who share common experiences, successes, and challenges.  Through weekly group meetings co-led by parents and professionals, participants gain a sense of belonging, learn about family dynamics, serve as resources to one another, advocate for themselves and other parents, and recognize that seeking help is a sign of strength.

Groups vary from community to community depending on the needs of the parents. Some are open to all parents regardless of family status or children's ages, while other groups are designed to meet specific populations such as fathers, parents of special needs children, homeless mothers, and Spanish-speaking parents.

New program sites continue to join the Network and participate in core training to help them develop their groups.  We are particularly interested in and supportive of partnerships between family support agencies and the faith community to implement Circle of Parents programs.  If you are interested in starting a Circle of Parents Program in your community or want more information, please call 1-800-CHILDREN or send an email to info@preventchildabusenc.org.
