Johnston County Student Led Fundraising Project for Prevent Child Abuse NC

by klauer last modified April 24, 2008

South Johnston High senior, Brittany Beasley, chose Prevent Child Abuse North Carolina for her senior year service project.  Through her dedicated work, she organized an April 5 volleyball tournament, which raised over $2,000 and brought together over 200 individuals throughout the community.

Ms. Beasley’s interest in child abuse prevention comes from her interest in helping all children thrive by working part-time at a local child care center.  She also shadowed a social worker at Johnston County’s Department of Social Services to learn more about their work in protecting children.  As a result of these experiences, Ms. Beasley decided to do more to support children and families in her area.

“This is the first time we have received such support from an amazingly motivated young person,” says Rosie Allen, President & CEO of Prevent Child Abuse North Carolina.  “Ms. Beasley’s initiative and commitment brings attention to the role each of us has can play in preventing child abuse.  The accomplishments of this extraordinary young woman highlight the strength of communities in supporting children and families.  While parenting is a tough job, awareness of available support and resources help ease the challenges of taking good care of children.  When parents have access to quality child care, health services and parent education, they can better cope with the stresses of parenting and help their children grow up to become productive and nurturing parents themselves.”

Ms. Allen congratulated the volleyball players and all of the community supporters who came together to make the tournament a success.
