Prevent Child Abuse North Carolina offers a wide range of professional training opportunities. We host a biennial statewide conference on child abuse and neglect, yearly workshops covering a variety of topics, and Prevention Network Regional meetings across the state.We also partner with other statewide and local advocacy organizations to provide selective training in communities across North Carolina. The Incredible Years – BASIC Parent Group Leader Training
July 14-16, 2009
Program Description
The Incredible Years BASIC Parenting Program is an evidence-based manualized curriculum that is designed to promote positive parenting strategies and to assist parents in managing children’s behavioral challenges. This three-day training will educate potential group leaders about how to implement the program in their communities. Content of this curriculum includes play, positive reinforcement, limit-setting, nonphysical discipline alternatives, problem solving, effective communication skills, and supporting children's education. Group therapy process issues such as empowering parents, collaborating, dealing with resistance, and supporting and advocating for parents will be discussed. This program may be used by professionals (such as therapists and parent educators) who are working with parents or caregivers of young children (ages 3-12 years) with conduct difficulties. The training will illustrate how to use this prevention program within a community-based setting. Participants will be exposed to both the Preschool (ages 3 to 6) and School Age (ages 6 to 12) versions of this curriculum.
Program Format
Practitioners interested in implementing The BASIC Parenting Program should be aware that the program consists of 12-16 weekly two-hour group sessions.
Training Requirements
Group leaders can come from many disciplines, including counseling, social work, psychology, psychiatry, child development, nursing, and education. Prospective leaders should have education or experience in child development, behavior management, and group process skills.

The fee for this training is $450; however Prevention Network members may attend at the discounted rate of $400. The training fee includes lunch, an extensive syllabus, and a copy of the book, A Troubleshooting Guide for Parents, by Carolyn Webster-Stratton.
Please note this is not a stand-alone workshop, but rather is preparation to implement this curriculum as a group leader or program coordinator. Participants who are interested in implementing the program would purchase curriculum materials directly through the National Incredible Years Office in Seattle, Washington. This is not a prerequisite to training.

Recognizing & Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect: Training for Professionals Working with Children

This full day introductory level training is designed to help professionals learn how to recognize child maltreatment indicators to better support families and protect children.
At the conclusion of this training professionals will understand:

Engaging Mothers with Substance Abuse Disorders

Every day professionals working with families encounter clients dealing with issues of addiction. However, many professionals report feeling ill-equipped to work with these families.
This training will provide participants a foundation for effectively engaging and working with mothers dealing with Substance Abuse Disorders. This foundation level one-day training is designed to meet the needs of professionals who do not have a background in substance abuse by providing essential information on:

Prevention Basics: An Introduction to Child Maltreatment Prevention & How prevention works with families, agencies and communities
October 14, 2009, Goldsboro, NC
Prevention Basics is a one-day introductory training on child maltreatment prevention for professionals working with children and families. This training is designed to give professionals a framework for thinking about prevention.
The training will be facilitated by Rachel Galanter, MPH, Family Support Specialist and Program Manager at the Durham Exchange Clubs' Family Center. Rachel has over 15 years experience with children, youth, and families in a variety of settings including shelters, transitional housing, home visiting, crisis intervention, and schools. She is committed to empowering families to build on their strengths and believes that families need to experience reasons to make changes.
Using a blend of interactive discussions and skill building exercises, Rachel will help professionals learn how to integrate the latest research on brain development, communication strategies, and motivational interviewing into their existing practice to achieve greater success.
This training will explore:
- The impact of child maltreatment on families, communities, and society
- WHY child maltreatment happens
- WHAT child maltreatment prevention is
- HOW professionals can use prevention tools to engage families, agencies and communities
