Dear Friends of Families

There is no question: Parenting is challenging! When entire communities make a commitment to families by supporting the hard work of parenting, we will make great progress indeed. Too often, unrealistic expectations, poor stress and anger management skills, inexperience, and crises contribute to child abuse and neglect. When we start with the common understanding that parents need support so children can thrive, we can be a part of communities that help families thrive. It’s no surprise that vibrant, healthy communities do a great job of supporting families!
We hope you will join in celebrating and promoting April – Child Abuse Prevention Month. During April, advocates across the country coordinate efforts and educate the American public about the importance of protecting children and supporting families. Last year, participants across our state distributed more than 80,000 blue ribbons and 200,000 educational brochures. These numbers represent a great commitment to children and families, with all 100 North Carolina counties participating in activities.
This year our April Campaign focuses on parenting with realistic expectations. We know that many children who “act up” are simply acting their age. Parents—and communities that support them—must work together to understand that many of these “terrible” behaviors are actually very normal. We’re encouraging parents to relax, learn more, ask for support from other parents, and seek community support.
This packet of information is designed to help you connect with parents and with children of all ages. The earlier, the better, so we can help parents learn coping skills from the start. It is filled with ideas for action, sample materials, and Parent Pages that you can photocopy and distribute throughout your community.
By helping parents understand child development, we can make a difference in a child’s life. Thank you for the work you do throughout the year to protect children and support families. Our common goal is within reach: a safe, nurturing home for every child in this state and the comfort of a caring community.
