Vice President for External Relations

Prevent Child Abuse North Carolina (PCA-NC) is searching for an energetic, mission-focused team player to serve as our Vice President for External Relations.  This professional must have a successful track record and experience that is relevant to the field of nonprofit resource development and communications.  He or she will serve as a member of the CEO's leadership team and will provide direction on matters related to PCA-NC’s development and communication program.

PCA-NC’s goal is to design and execute a dynamic external relations and development program using the highest ethical standards while endeavoring to constantly promote goodwill among PCA-NC donors, policy makers, community partners, and key stakeholders.

We are looking for someone who has strong resource development experience, excellent written and verbal communications skills, a relationship builder, and who has a working knowledge of strategic planning, event management, and program development.  Knowledge of government and media relations is a plus.  Minimum of a bachelors degree from an accredited college or university and 5 years experience in nonprofit development, communications, or related field.  Travel in North Carolina is required.

Internship Opportunities

Student interns at PCA North Carolina are provided with office space, telephone, computers, and are reimbursed for travel/expenses as appropriate.  Most internships are unpaid, although we do occasionally have funding to pay a small student stipend.  Although our business hours are 8:30 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday, we offer flexible hours for students to accommodate class and work schedules, and we encourage all interested to apply.  

PCA North Carolina offers several time frames for internships including summer internships, semester internships, and academic year internships.  Students who are interested in “group projects” are encouraged to contact our office to see if there are opportunities for policy analysis, program development, or advocacy initiatives that would be appropriate for their course of study.

Specific areas of study for 2008 spring and summer semesters, include:

Circle of Parents Program: The North Carolina Circle of Parents Program is a mutual support program for parents who are at risk of child maltreatment.  PCA North Carolina spearheads the program in the state – recruiting new programs, providing technical assistance and training, and coordinating quality assurance and evaluation processes. Students involved with the Circle of Parents Program will assist the Program Coordinator in program recruitment, developing a strong quality assurance process for the program, and assisting the sites in understanding and more competently administering program evaluation methods.  

NEEDED: Graduate level students in public health, social work, psychology or other appropriate fields.

Child Maltreatment Prevention Leadership Team and Workgroups: PCA North Carolina, in conjunction with the NC Institute of Medicine, has just completed a statewide Task Force on Child Abuse Prevention that culminated in a report with 37 recommendations to enhance prevention practice, funding, and policies in North Carolina.  The recommendations are being implemented with the assistance of an Interdepartmental Leadership Team in the NC Division of Public Health.  PCA North Carolina co-chairs the Leadership Team and continues to play a lead role in executing the work.  Students involved with the Child Maltreatment Prevention Leadership Team will:

•  Assist in research for the Leadership Team and its workgroups.  Examples include: Assisting the Evidence-Based Workgroup in researching specific evidence-based practices in home visiting, parent education, family resource centers, etc.  Students will have opportunity to conduct research, talk with other states implementing practices, and presenting information to the workgroup.
• Take leadership role in recommendation implementation.  Several recommendations of the Leadership Team have not yet been adopted by any specific agency.  Students will have an opportunity to choose one of these recommendations and implement strategies to move the recommendations forward.  A good example is one recommendation which discusses the need to study maternal depression in North Carolina, including prevalence, treatment, access to services, and barriers to service.  

NEEDED: Graduate level students in public health, social work, psychology, public administration, or other appropriate fields.

Communications/Fund Development Projects: PCA North Carolina has well-developed communications and fundraising programs.  The communications program develops implements and evaluates all efforts to educate the public, parents, and providers about child maltreatment prevention.  This includes APRIL Child Abuse Prevention month materials/efforts, Back to School Campaign, parent and professional educational materials, ongoing media awareness (public service announcements, press releases), and in 2006/2007 a new effort to develop a statewide public education campaign focused on positive parenting.  The fund development program includes special events, corporate relationships, individual giving, and major gifts efforts.
 
Students interested in learning more about working with the media, public education efforts, and resource development will have opportunities to assist the Communications and Development Director in multiple areas of work including day-to-day activities.

NEEDED: Undergraduate level students in communications, mass communications, public relations, graphic design, journalism, public administration, English, or other appropriate fields.

Students interested in research and writing can assist in development of our Professional Educational materials.  PCA North Carolina has several publications including a Program Advisory Series in which we translate current research about child abuse prevention into accessible materials for professionals.  Students will be able to research a chosen topic and either take the lead or assist in writing a summary for a professional audience.
